Welcome to the Centenary website of the Missionary Society of St. Paul. As the Society opened its small doors at a small house in Mdina, Malta, in 1910, today, a hundred years later it opens this latest window onto the world. A celebration of the joy of turning 100, this website brings to you the people and places, the images and faces of those who make it happen in different countries around the world. In the diversity of cultures, and experiences which make up the MSSP story, we hope you find here news of your friends, missionaries and loved ones: we invite you to share their journey, embrace their vision, and rejoice with them at this special centenary year.

Community
By choosing a way of life for the members of his infant Society which centred around the communal living of religious life, Joseph De Piro shaped the Society he founded on the pillar of communion.
In the Original Constitutions, Joseph De Piro writes, "Everyone should be convinced regarding the need for reciprocal love towards each other. In fact, the power and efficacy of our Society's pastoral work towards the glory of God and the redemption of humankind depends upon how much our Society members are in union with each other."
Undertaking the task of building community today, remains one of the major challenges to the MSSP during its Centenary year. Not least in the field of missionary outreach, the way of community is the path to true empowerment in the light of the Gospels.
The model of the missionary Apostle, St. Paul, who set up faith communities wherever he went on his missionary journeys is also another model for MSSP members to emulate in founding and nurturing their own communities of faith.
Today, most of MSSP ministry centres around community. Apart from an increasing emphasis on strengthening the internal bonds of each MSSP religious community, various MSSP centres around the world have developed different but similar models of communities of faith, centred around the Word of God, the celebration of the Eucharist, and service to the poor and needy.
The call to mission, for the MSSP is enfleshed in the communities it creates.
Formation
Formation in the MSSP context has experienced major shifts along the years. The last twenty years have particularly been marked by a shift towards internationality, particularly with communities with members from different countries, and with the opening of the International House of Formation in Manila, the Philippines.
The interchange of members between one region and another, and the onset of the internet and easier means of connecting through the medium have brought people and resources to a place which is more accessible for all those involved in the formation of MSSP members and laity alike.
The demand for authentic formation for mission today comes not only from the complex realities which missionaries encounter in their tasks, but also from an increasing number of committed lay people in various countries where the MSSP is present, who have come to share its charism and vision. The continuing search for ways to understand the spirituality of the Founder, Joseph De Piro, and the response of the Missionary Society of St. Paul to the world today begs for a rigorous approach to the formation of MSSP members and collaborators.
The end of each formation process remains that stated by the Founder himself, quoting St. Paul: "Until Christ is formed in you." No matter how refined the process of formation becomes, the MSSP, heeding the Founders choice of psalms believes that it is God, not we, who form. "Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain." (Psalm 127)
In this Centenary year, all the members in Formation, and all those who hold Gods calling through the Missionary Society of St. Paul dear, rejoice, in acknowledging the faithfulness of he who turns earthenware vessels, into instruments of his loving action in the world.
Ministry
No mission can happen unless it comes from within. The members of the Missionary Society of St. Paul embrace a lifestyle which is one of self-giving, born of a deep and personal spiritual relationship with God.
Through service in missionary lands, and through the creation of a deeper awareness of the missionary dimension of the Church, the MSSP, drawing from the wellsprings of Joseph De Piro, its founder, is inspired to give to others the gift of faith.
Whilst it traces its origin to Malta, first evangelised by the Apostle Paul in the very early years of Christianity, it finds in his words, the inspiration to transmit the joy of Christ throughout the world. Through the building of community, and reaching out to the poor and needy of the world, the members of the Missionary Society of St. Paul make the conscious choice to serve in mission.
Adopting missionary service as a fourth vow, in their consecration as religious, most of their work centres around sensitizing the church to remain focused on the little ones of the Kingdom: the poor, needy and disadvantaged.
In lands which are not strictly missionary, the role of the Missionary Society of St Paul centres around evangelisation, missionary animation, youth outreaches and voluntary experiences in MSSP missionary lands.
Through this, the Pauline family, strives to ensure, that across its regions, the values of solidarity with the poor, and concern for building authentic Christian communities, remain at the top of the agenda of each local Church.
